Starting....Now.

Hey world! Me again. But who else would be posting on my blog? Maybe my alter ego Xxxxxx .X Xxxxxx (my name backwards). It's been a while since my last post (again) but not too much of a while to be bad. It's not like I have any more books to review, yet (I'm reading a toughy, but it just got good). But I have to make this quick, because I have to do something that takes 30 minutes before four o'clock and it's 2:17 now, and blogging usually takes a while because I always seem to end up watching book trailers.

So, today I'm reviewing a book called Starters by Lissa Price. It has a sequel, and four short stories! And the trailer is also pretty awesome. AND - yes, there's another and - the book is published in sooo many different languages! I didn't count, but it's a lot. Here's the Amazon link. It's not the absolute best audible, but it's still pretty good. I imagined her voice higher and wispier.

Summaryish: After the Spore Wars, which killed everyone between the ages of 20 and 60, Callie's only hope to feed her younger brother is to rent out her body to Enders who wish to relieve their youthful years. But when her chip malfunctions and she wakes up in the life of her renter, she begins to discover that Prime Destinations - the company that rents her body - is even more shady than she at first assumed. And while her new life living in a mansion seems like a fairy tale, she must save her little brother, stop a murder, and...other things I can't tell you about.

Review: At first, I didn't like this book. But that was just the first 20 pages, which is only 5% of the book. The rest of the book was a thought-consuming wild ride that was absolutely awesome from start to finish. Well, page twenty to finish. I was actually surprised at how much I loved this book, and now I can't wait to get the next one! It was excellently written and plotted out, with just enough foreshadowing that I could guess at the end but never be quite certain. It's layers and layers of mystery and action, perfectly paced! This book is a winner, through and through. No wonder it's published in so many countries.

About the Cover:

I only picked this book up because the cover looked interesting. Well, the side that faced me in the aisle, anyway. The front of the cover is actually kind of creepy, and it made me second-guess my choice to pick it up. But I put it in my bag, forgot about it, and was creeped out again when I was checking out. I like the Portuguese and Italian covers much better. Usually, I judge books by their covers, and this is no exception. I was kind of creeped out while reading, but in the best way possible.

Okay, bye, see you next time!

"Requiem for a Dream" Only Has Choral Chanting.

Hey world! Last time I posted, I promised I would come back with tea. Well, it's been so hot out recently that tea was completely illogical. But I'm having tea and Nutella now, so here I am to blog! Snap, I just choked on the tea! And it's spicy, so it burned!!! But I'm better now, so I'm going to continue.

So, a while ago, because I'm a terrible blogger and waited like a week, I read this book called Requiem by Lauren Oliver. It is book there of the Delirium trilogy, so, naturally, it is the final one. There are, however, a few short stories somewhere in the world. The Amazon link is right around here. There's an audible, and it's actually quite excellent. Nice range of voices and inflections.

Summaryish: Rules are happening now - no reading this if you haven't read the first two books. After escaping into the Wilds with Julian, and finding someone she thought was long dead, Lena is faced with the most difficult decision she's had to make since deciding to leave the cities. Not to mention the fact that she has helped spark a rebellion that's ravishing the cities, hopefully for the good. Meanwhile, her best friend Hana lives a safe, love free life that turning sour. My tea is cold now.

Review: This book was pretty good! It had a very intriguing story line that can only be described as spine-vibrating, if that makes sense. Not tingling, mind you, vibrating. There's a huge difference. There were some places that could have used a bit more...something. Oomph, I guess. And all-in-all, it feels almost like things were just dragged out too long. I did, however, enjoy the fact that each book was just a little bit different from the last - quotes in one, now and then in two, and Hana/Lena in three - very well done. Most series books just keep similar formatting and the like, but this was a refreshing change. To my recollection, I never felt any desperate longing for whatever came next, but it was still a great book worthy of your reading.

Words to the Characters:

Lena: I don't think you made the right choice. I mean, sure, he was you-know-what, but he was you-know-how!!

Julian: Hmmm.

Okay, done here, I only have two books more to review, not quite worthy of a marathon, so see you when I see you!

AGH! Still No Song!

Hey world! Isn't this amazing? TEN posts in a row! My Arnold Palmer tastes weird. Well, that was a random comment! I also got new tea, so next time I blog, it can be at tea time! Woo! I also just won the game 4096, so all-in-all, I'm having a great day. Snap, something terrible is probably going to happen now. Oh well, that will make the good things seem even better!

So, yesterday (I'm all caught up now!) I finished this book called Perfect Lies by Kiersten White. I just spent an hour entering a contest. Yeesh. Anyways, this is the sequel to the book Mind Games and I don't think there's going to be another one, kind of like the last book I reviewed. If you're looking for the Amazon link, it's here! Not a very good audible, Fia's parts should be faster and jumpier.

Summaryish: Rules = on. After pretending to kill her sister when actually handing her over to the Lerner group to protect her, Fia is deep in the Keane foundation working with her boyfriend to take down his father from within. Meanwhile, Annie is trying to save the girls that Fia is helping to recruit to the school and trying to figure what Fia's plan is through her limited visions of her.

Review: I loved this book! So much it took me less than one day to finish it! I really like the way it flips through time "six months before" and "five days before" and back to "five months before," it's beautiful the way the story reveals itself in leaps and bounds, something that keeps you guessing until the very end! I can really appreciate the amount of work that went into creating the timeline! It's excellent and leaves you short of breath with all of the twists and turns and mysteries and I-must-know-NOW-therefore-I-will-read-until-seconds-before-dinnertime. It's a gem, I'm happy I picked it up!

Words to the Characters:

Fia: I'm happy that you finally got what you wanted for yourself, you deserved it after all you went through.

Annie: Snapskers, I did not expect THAT! But well done, you're a good sister.

Okay, I'm done. See you in a few days, because the marathon is officially OVER!

There Might Be A Song About This Somewhere.

Hey world! This is Day...Nine? of my marathon! I'm starting to think that we'll even make it to ten! Won't that be simply wonderful? But let's not get ahead of ourselves, we should just talk about the book at hand. Wouldn't want to muddle reviews by thinking about future ones!

So, just Monday, so I'm almost completely caught up, I finished this book called Guardian by Alex London, who sometimes goes by Alexander London, and sometimes C. Alexander London, and sometimes Charles London. A man of many names, it would seem, but only one website. This is the sequel to Proxy which I also reviewed here, sometime in November I think. A pretty long while ago at least! But, this Amazon link is still young, because the book just came out in May.

Summaryish: Rules about not reading this if you haven't read Proxy beginning now. After they took the system at the cost of Knox's life, Syd has become the symbol of hope for the people in this daring new age. But people are falling ill. It started with the Guardians, but quickly progressed to the normal people. The only way to cure the possibly fatal disease is to reboot the network, which means reversing the revolution that Knox and Syd began.

Review: Okay, maybe it's just because I read this book right after a super awesome one, but the thing I have to say about this book is: Boring. Sure, it had action, sure there was suspense, sure there was mystery, and yeah it was beautifully written and even had some discussion about things like survivor's guilt and weighing one person's life against another, but, honestly, I didn't really care what happened in the book as long as I got through the next few hours before my library visit. I guess this book and I just weren't compatible. It happens sometimes.

About the Cover:

So, the big finale is located in a city, and there's a city on the cover. But that city was supposed to be all dirty and old and abandoned, when the city on the cover looks very new and sparkly, which left me a bit disappointed. But, I must admire the font choice. It's a gorgeous font and I wish I knew what it was called. I even checked the copyright page. Overall, though, I must admit that the cover had a nice mysterious and intriguing affect about it. Very enticing.

See you tomorrow unless I don't, bye!

There's Got to Be a Song About This...Maybe Not.

Hey world! Woohoo! Breaking records all over the place! I feel bad today because yesterday I forgot to wish you a happy Bastille day, or une jouyeuse fête nationale as the French would say. Yeah, I speak French, and I take every opportunity to brag about that, too. Right now I'm wishing I weren't out of tea. I have one lonely tea bag left...Maybe I will drink it today. But not right now, it's time to talk about the book now.

So, just, like, two days ago I finished this book called Hacker by Ted Dekker of the Outlaw Chronicles. It's not the first in the series, but one of the awesome things about Ted Dekker is that you rarely have to read his series books in order. I'm a little confused about this series though, because I think some of them area also four novellas you can get separately as ebooks or something. Agh, I keep hearing this sound and I have no idea what it is. My blog posts are really unorganized. Amazon link! No audible here, which is a shame because the samples are so fun.

Summaryish: Nyah Parks is a seventeen year old genius who hacks big corporations for the money to pay her mom's medical bills. She is planning her biggest hack of all when she stumbles across information not meant for her eyes. To escape the corporation's security specialist (ahem, assassin, cough), the only choice available to her and her mom is to take the ultimate leap of faith and hack her own brain for the answers to questions she didn't even know she needed to ask.

Review: Whoa. Snap. If this book were just a smidgen less awesome, it would be a Wow. Just Wow. No typo there, I said less. As it is, this book is so amazing it's not even in the same category of a Wow. Just Wow. Because it's not just a good story, it's a meaningful one. It's packed with the action and suspense every good book (at least in my genres) need, but it also has a beautiful truth about it that makes it even better. This is one of those books that is impossible to keep to yourself. I read it, and instead of putting it on my "finished" book pile, I passed it right off to someone else. Don't hesitate to pick this book up, it might just change the way you see the world.

Words to the Characters:

Austin: You're just like me except smarter! We should totally become friends! Which would kind of void the way we're alike. Carry on.

Nyah: I speak JavaScript too! Except I'm having troubles getting these rectangles to move the way I want them. I tried a bunch of different if statements in my var draw, but it didn't work. Maybe a while loop or something...

Okay, I still have one book left, so see you tomorrow for what might be the end of the marathon!

I Promised Song Lyrics But Couldn't Think of Any. Do Re Me.

Hey world! I checked, and yes, this is Day Seven! A marathon that lasted a week! Woo! And I still have one, possibly two, book(s) left to review, so this is definitely going to be a record breaking marathon of awesomeness. I'm also going to the library tomorrow (7/15) so now is the time for requests.

So, recently, not even almost recently, it really is recently now, I finished this book called Tempest Rising by Tracy Deebs. (I just had probably my longest string of typos ever trying to get all of this written correctly.) It's book one in a trilogy, and the whole trilogy is already out so no worries there. I've read a Tracy Deebs before. Still waiting for the sequel to that. Might bias my review. Kidding. Anyways, Amazon link. There's an audible, but I don't feel like listening to it. (Today is not my day for typing - thank goodness for the backspace key!)

Summaryish: On her 17th birthday, Tempest faces the biggest choice of her life. Stay on land, or return to the sea like her mother before her. She's a mermaid, by the way. She wants to stay with her family and her boyfriend, but a mysterious sea person and a wicked sea witch might just succeed in spoiling her plans. Wow,  a summary both short and terrible. But there's not really anything else I can say about it!

Review: So I really liked this book, it wasn't a hopeless love, but I still liked it, and I can see all the lines laid for a great trilogy to come, but as a book by itself, it could be better. I never stopped reading to stare at the ceiling in boredom, because a lot was going on and it was very interesting, but something about it just made it really easy to tune out, and I kept missing stuff and having to go back. Plus, there wasn't a lot of building tension, it was just like, oh, sea battle. Nice. I just felt like it needed a little bit more to give it an A+ rating. As it is, I'd give it a B, which is still good enough for you to get out and read. I'm looking forward to the next books in the series, because I can see how the story is just going to get better from here!

About the Cover:

This is a pretty nice cover with great font choice, and it's very pleasing to the eye. The one thing that I noticed, however, is that Tempest on the front, while she looks like she is described which makes me happy, is very obviously standing upright. The thing is, you can see the beginnings of her mermaid tail. Standing upright - mermaid tail. How on earth is she standing upright! It confuses me!

Okay, see you tomorrow for the record breaking post!

I Haven't Quoted Song Lyrics In My Titles For a While.Maybe Next Time.

Hey world! I think this is Day Six, but I'm not entirely certain. I'm pretty sure it is, though, so let's go with that. This post is probably going to take a while because I'm secretly doing other things at the same time as blogging. I am a multi-tasker! Which actually causes focus issues, so it's not really a sentence worthy of an explanation mark. But I just love them! See: !!! ! !! ! !!!!! !! Moving on.

So, it was actually almost recently that I read this book called Vengeance by Megan Miranda. It is the sequel to Fracture which I read, oh, about eight books ago. It's not really a series, it just has a sequel. Disappointment. But anyways, I've got a nice Amazon link here for you. The audible is very nice, read by a lady affecting a deep voice despite the fact that it's narrated by a guy. It's enunciated fabulously, not read too slow like some audibles.

Summaryish: Falcon Lake is out for revenge. At least, that's what the rumors are saying. Delaney escaped death beneath the ice a year ago, and now it seems that everyone connected to her is dying in her place. And when another tragedy shakes up Decker's world, all he can feel is anger for the person who used to be the love of his life. More unexplained events occur, and it becomes apparent that Falcon Lake isn't as calm and peaceful as it appears to be. That was actually a pretty okay summaryish.

Review: By reading this book, I've come to realize that just because a book is a little on the short side doesn't mean I shouldn't read it. I've also discovered that reading outside my favorite genre can be a good thing, too. This book is more suspense and mystery than action adventure, but something about it makes me think even someone who hates reading can enjoy this book. I could read this book in one sitting! It's so utterly enthralling. Words like "unputdownable" were created with this book in mind! The only complaint I have is that there was this one thing that just didn't go anywhere...it was built up to look like it was important, but then it's like the plot lines were sliced. But it's still a wonderful book!

Words to the Characters:

Decker: Uh, hellooooo, it was a promise! He was dying for goodness' sake.

Delaney: Don't you mind him, you did the right thing. Also, milk, ha.

Okay, see you tomorrow. Bye!

It Is Close to Dinner Time...

Hey world! So, it's Day Five (yes, I capitalized those letters), but more than that, it's the twelfth of July. Happy twelfth Northern Irish readers! Gotta love public radio, it tells you about everything. I'm kind of embarrassed right now because I just, like two seconds ago, changed my calendar from June to July. Oh, I'm so pathetic. But I didn't forget to blog, so that's gotta be at least one point in my favor.

So, I'm pretty sure I'm up to reviewing Hunger by Michael Grant, book two of six in the Gone series. We're getting so close to where I am now! Only maybe two books left, but I am reading a short book, so maybe we'll have an eight day marathon. That would be a new record I think, since I usually forget around day six or seven. This time, maybe we'll go all the way. Who knows? Even a Day Nine is a possibility. But back to the book. The Amazon link is here, still no audible though. You know those "recommended for you" things on YouTube? Mine are mostly book trailers and Star Trek bloopers. Fun little fact about me that I thought you might like to know. (Okay, I didn't think you'd want to know that, I was just thinking about that because I was watching a book trailer and I generally type whatever I'm thinking.)

Summaryish: The kids in Perdido Beach are starving. The first few weeks, they ate all the junk food leaving the meat and fruit and vegetables to rot, and now they're paying the ultimate price. With tensions growing between the freaks and the normals, and the Darkness gaining strength, Sam, newly elected mayor, is faced with difficult decisions. The hardest one of all regarding his long lost brother Caine, and his not-so loyal follower Drake. That was a terrible summary, even for me.

Review: I need the next one. This is no longer a want, this is a need. Because, like, whoa. The first book in this series got a good review...this one, if it's possible, is better. There wasn't a 200 page slump this time, and that was very happy-making. Well, more like pull-out-my-hair-snap-this-is-intense-and-beautiful making. Let me tell you something: 590 pages - one and half days. Yup. Three hundred page books have taken longer. It's full of action, suspense, even a little meaning, and it's spooky, but in an awesome way. So, why are you still reading my poorly written blog? Go get this book!

About the Title:

Very nicely chosen, Mr. Grant. I thought this title meant one thing when going in, but it had that secret meaning packed into it that I found very clever and effective. I also like this whole "one word" thing going on, it's just curiosity-inducing enough and also very mysterious sounding, which kind of reflects some of the themes of the book. Claps for that.

Okay, see you tomorrow unless I don't.

There's a Song Stuck in My Head. It Has Nothing To Do With The Book.

Hey world! Day four, and I didn't forget! I just finished watching my Star Trek for the week. Lovely episodes, though there was only one funny part. They also experimented with different camera angles. Very - forgive me for saying - fascinating. Now that I've run upstairs to see which book I'm reviewing and read a nice poem, I think I'm ready to press the enter key!

So, recently, and by recently I mean less than a week so hurrah, I finished this book called The Drowning by Rachel Ward. I don't think it's a series, which kind of saddens me. I've reviewed books by Mrs. Ward before, in fact, I've read every book Mrs. Ward has written. (You can probably see where this review is going.) The Amazon link is here, but I'm disappointed there's no audible. I wanted to hear the British accents.

Summaryish: When Carl Adams is told that his big brother drowned, and Carl can't remember a thing about it or the girl who rode in the ambulance with him screaming her head off, he must figure out what really went on that day. Complicating things is the fact that Carl is seeing his dead brother's face, in the rain, in the drain. And it's speaking to him, telling him that he must kill the screaming girl. Was that hard to follow? I feel like it was hard to follow. It was also very short.

Review: Snap, this book was fantastic! I expected nothing less from a Rachel Ward, though. It was like this slow and dangerous walk across a high wire with no net. And by slow I don't mean slow, I mean building in the most intense way possible. I stayed up way to late - or should I say early - reading this book. But I don't regret the loss of sleep, not at all! It was a great book, a little creepy, but it kept me guessing. The plot lines were laid absolutely perfectly, and the suspense had me about ready to burst. Two thumbs, both up.

I can't really think of a last paragraph, and I'm bored now, so I'm just going to leave. Bye.

I Was Going To Make Another Frozen Related Title, But Two in a Row?

Hey world! Welcome to day three of the what's turning out to be a really long marathon, because I keep finishing books! Ahh! I think we've finally caught up to this library visit, though, so that's good. I say the word "though" a lot. And "anyways." I wonder why. I'll have to think about my weird love of those words and consider using them less often. Wouldn't want a hackneyed blog, of course!

So, it was probably around a week ago that I finished reading the book Empower by Jessica Shirvington, the last in the five book Violet Eden Chapters series, also known as the Embrace series. I have reviewed every single one of these books here on my blog, so that's an accomplishment! I starts series all the time, but finishing them is a much more rare occurrence. I'm not wishy-washy - my library is. Anyways, oops, there I go using that word again! But seriously, Amazon link. I'm listening to beautiful piano music right now, so no sampling of the audible.

Summaryish: You know the rules, and this summaryish is no exception. Two years have passed since Violet left her home town to travel the world returning exiles as a Rogue, but when one of her best friends is kidnapped by someone from her past she always knew she would run into again, she has no choice but to return to the Academy to help rescue him. Which means all sorts of troubles from her past rise up to the surface.

Review: So I liked this book, I liked this whole series...but is it really bad of me to say that I'm happy it's over? It was really good - intense, action filled, semi-suspenseful, and full of all sorts of strains that make it complicated...But there were some parts that were just so...repetitive. I feel like Violet is repeating the same things over and over again, struggling with the same things and never really growing as a person. I've also noticed that half the fights mean absolutely nothing and are just thrown in there because no one has been stabbed in a while. And there are also some parts that are really hard to follow, and half the time I'm not sure why people are reacting the way they are. I'm getting the feeling that everything is supposed to be so connected...but I can't see that, and I wish it were clearer. Wow, that was a lot of complaints! Don't misunderstand me, I really do like these books...not exactly love...but still like, and you will too if you read it. They're a rush while you read them, but it's not like I ever obsessed and cried for the next one. You don't need to rush, just get them if you see them. The best book was the third one, by the way.

Words to the Characters:

Phoenix: I was voting for you, but hey, can't fight with soul mates. I also just misspelled your name twice. Sorry about that.

Yes, I only spoke to one character, shocking, I know, but I didn't have anything to say to anyone else. See you tomorrow. But tomorrow is Star Trek day, so don't be surprised if I forget.

NOT of Arendelle.

Hey world! Cue Diego the saber tooth tiger voice - Yeah, who's up for round two! Second day of the current marathon, and boy is it a big book! I think I may have mentioned it a few posts ago, but now it's for real! Woo! And strawberry and chocolate yogurt makes it even better. Oh, I just wish I had tea, but, alas, I ran out. There's just one bag left that I'm saving for...sometime. Anyway, book.

So, it was a long time ago when I started Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy, but only a little over a week since I finished it. Wow, I just impressed myself, because I already have another four books to review, not exactly short ones either. Okay, two of them were rather short, but let me have this one moment of self-impressing in my boring-to-others-but-not-to-me life that has so few. Here's the Amazon link, but there is no audible which leaves me slightly surprised because it's such a famous book. Poor blind people and joggers with no time to sit and read.

Summaryish: Oh là là! Where to begin? So there's this lady named Anna Karenina, who thinks she's happy in her life...until she meets the dashing Count Vronsky who makes her realize that, why, no, she's not happy with her life after all. She leaves behind her husband and child to live the life she thought she wanted...to disastrous results. Also, the life and times of Levin, Kitty, and others. Short summary for a book with 817 pages.

Review: Goodness, this book is like a soap opera on paper! So much drama and emotion and things leading to other things that it makes me want to just quit reading and sit around all day watching All My Children because I liked it so much! Okay, that's not going to happen, but I did very very much enjoy reading this book. It was written in the 1800s, so it was a little tough to read, and I didn't get all of the allusions, as expected, but my translators are awesome and they have notes about those in the back. There were some parts that were slow, and others that were boring, but those were few and far between, and most of the book was awesometastic and beautiful! Yay! So not only by reading this will you get a good experience and a nice story, but you also get bragging rights because Tolstoy, 1800s, 817 pages. Bam.

Words to the Characters:

Anna: Oh, Anna, there is just so much to say to you I can't even begin...It's nice that you love him and all, but, dear, you can do so much better.

Kitty: I knew that was going to happen. I could see it in your fictitious imagined eyes...

Okay, see you tomorrow. Who knows what the last paragraph will be about?

I've Always Wanted Something Like This.

Hey world! Did I forget to blog again? Woopsidaisy! It's just that I was reading some really good books, and you know how hard it is to put those down! More on that later, now it's time for me to get right into blogging because I haven't done it in a while. So, goodbye introductory paragraph! If we miss you, we'll just read it again later. Oh, by the way, this is the start of a marathon.

So, a time so long ago I'd really not like to mention it I finished this book called Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas. It is book two of the Throne of Glass series, with book three coming out in September. There are four companion novellas published together in a separate book, hardback, paperback, all that jazz. The amazon link is here, but the audible isn't the best one I've ever heard. Kind of...loud and jumpy for such a smooth and quietly intense tone.

Summaryish: It's been several...dare I say it...weeks, and frankly I don't really feel like summarizing, so I'm just going to say that after winning the competition to become the king's champion, Celaena is doing her job, but she's far from loyal. As mysteries in the castle grow and hidden magics rise to the surface,  Celaena not only must keep dark secrets where they belong, but she must also find a way to save...you know...everyone. That was a really bad summary, but I did warn you.

Review: Is it possible that this book is better than the first one? Yes, definitely! It flows magically, if you'll pardon the pun, and as I've already mention, the quietly intense tone is enrapturing. Tearing my eyes away from the pages was almost painful, and I'm surprised I came away without a multitude of paper cuts. But now that I have talked about all the good things - pacing, tone, story, action - I must tell about the continuing problem of foreshadowing. It's a major issue, and I don't mean not enough of it, I mean way too much! Something I wasn't supposed to know until the last page of this book, I figured out very close to the beginning of the first one. So while I was gripping the pages at the action, I never once gasped in surprise or shock, which is something I really enjoy. I mean, yeesh, Celaena takes FOREVER to figure out the most obvious things!

About the Title:

I'm wondering what it has to do with anything. Yes, there was a slightly important crown and yes, there were stars involved with it. But that was, like, half a page, and it didn't really matter in the end because it came to nothing anyway. I get the whole mystery and intrigue of it, and the way that it needed to resemble the title of the first one, but I think maybe "Door of Blood" or "Eyes of Secrets" would have worked much much better. Because, Crown of Midnight? That just doesn't make sense.

How'd you like that last paragraph? Maybe the ending paragraph can just be whatever I'm in the mood for at the time.
